The Bharatiya Janata Party has named eight candidates for the October 16 Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh, leaving out Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and the party’s other outgoing members from the state.
The BJP nominated former Lok Sabha MP Priyanka Singh Rawat, Shruti Gangwar, Uttar Pradesh minister Dharampal Singh, Prakash Pal, Radhakant Ojha, Vidyasagar Sonkar, Gopi Krishna Pandey and Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan. The list includes three candidates from Other Backward Classes, two Brahmins, two Dalits and one Thakur, according to The Indian Express.
Puri and Union Minister of State B L Verma are among the incumbents who were not renominated. Puri is not a Lok Sabha member, and his Rajya Sabha term is due to end on November 25. Under constitutional rules, a minister who remains outside both Houses of Parliament for six consecutive months must leave the Cabinet.
Ten Uttar Pradesh seats are involved in the election. Based on the BJP’s strength in the state Assembly, it is expected to retain eight. The Samajwadi Party has fielded veteran leader Ram Gopal Yadav and Reliance executive Dhanraj Nathwani for the other two seats and has sufficient Assembly support to elect both, The Indian Express reported.
