Disney and Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Endgame” has reclaimed the title of highest-grossing film worldwide after a theatrical rerelease pushed its lifetime box office total past James Cameron’s “Avatar.”

Released Sept. 25 as “Avengers: Endgame Encore,” the new edition includes an introduction from Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans and several minutes of footage teasing December’s “Avengers: Doomsday.” It earned $26 million domestically and $86 million worldwide during its opening weekend.

The rerelease added another $18.8 million globally in its second weekend, including $4.4 million from domestic theaters and $14.4 million internationally. That brought the film’s lifetime worldwide total to approximately $2.9255 billion, narrowly exceeding the $2.9237 billion earned by “Avatar.” The Encore rerelease has grossed about $126 million globally.

“Endgame” first surpassed “Avatar” in 2019, the year the Marvel film was originally released. “Avatar” regained the record in 2021 following a rerelease in China.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, “Endgame” stars Downey, Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner. The Russo brothers are also directing “Avengers: Doomsday,” scheduled to open in cinemas on Dec. 18.
