Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez calls snap election for November 29

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called an early general election for November 29 after parliament rejected housing measures proposed by his minority coalition government.

The election had been scheduled for 2027, and Sanchez had repeatedly said his government would complete its four-year term. Announcing the decision on Monday, he said the government needed to “renew and broaden” public support and seek a larger progressive majority in parliament.

Friday’s parliamentary defeat involved measures intended to address Spain’s housing crisis, including the automatic extension of tenancy contracts and restrictions on evicting vulnerable tenants. The vote followed mounting pressure over housing costs, with tens of thousands of people marching in Madrid and other cities on Saturday to demand more affordable homes.

Sanchez acknowledged dissatisfaction among some supporters and said his government had made mistakes and fallen short of campaign promises. He framed the election as a choice between a far-right shift and continued policies based on “openness, social justice and environmental responsibility.”

Recent opinion polls have generally placed the conservative People’s Party ahead of Sanchez’s Socialist Workers’ Party. The People’s Party, which had repeatedly called for an early election, welcomed the announcement. Its leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, wrote on social media that Spaniards would finally decide.

Sanchez’s fragmented parliamentary alliance has struggled to pass legislation and has not secured approval for a new national budget since 2023.
