Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Sunday that military action and additional sanctions would not end the conflict with the United States, arguing that only negotiations based on “justice and fairness” could do so.
Speaking to foreign ambassadors in Tehran, Araghchi also warned that Iran would respond more forcefully if its adversaries resumed military confrontation. His comments came as talks between Tehran and Washington appeared stalled, with negotiations focused on Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf said the strategically important waterway would remain closed until seven Iranian conditions outlined in a June interim agreement were met. According to Dawn, those demands include a regional ceasefire, the release of frozen Iranian assets, an end to sanctions on Iran’s oil industry and the lifting of a US naval blockade.
Iranian and US officials held indirect discussions on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly last week, with Qatar carrying messages between them. US President Donald Trump rejected Tehran’s proposal publicly but left open the possibility of further negotiations or renewed military action.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Washington’s latest counterproposals largely repeated its earlier positions, particularly on the nuclear issue. He said Tehran was concentrating on conditions for reopening Hormuz and denied that Iran had proposed nuclear inspections in exchange for sanctions relief.
A UK maritime agency reported Sunday that another tanker in the strait had been struck by an unidentified projectile.
