At least 17 people, most of them Catholic pilgrims travelling to a prayer site, were killed in a multi-vehicle crash on Kenya’s Nairobi-Mombasa highway, police said Saturday.
The collision happened after midnight in the Salama area, about 90 kilometres southeast of Nairobi. Police said a truck driver attempted to overtake another truck but failed, causing a collision involving several vehicles, including a minibus carrying the pilgrims.
The minibus driver and 16 passengers, most of them women, died at the scene, according to police. Archbishop Martin Kivuva of the Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa said the pilgrims had been travelling to a prayer site in Nakuru County, west of Nairobi.
President William Ruto offered condolences to the victims’ families, friends, parishioners and the wider Catholic community.
Kenya’s National Transport and Safety Authority said it had sent investigators to establish the full circumstances of the collision. The authority described that section of the highway as a known accident “black spot” and said recommendations had previously been made to address safety concerns along the route.
