New reports have intensified scrutiny of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of warnings before Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack.
Haaretz reported that United Arab Emirates President Mohamed bin Zayed warned Netanyahu roughly a week and a half before the assault that then-Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was planning a major operation. According to the newspaper, Netanyahu responded that Hamas was likely preparing action in the West Bank and did not brief Israel’s security chiefs about the conversation. Netanyahu’s office has called the report an “absolute lie,” saying no such conversation or warning occurred. Haaretz said it stands by its reporting, while The New York Times separately received confirmation from two sources that bin Zayed warned Netanyahu of a major Hamas attack.
Haaretz also reported that Netanyahu later met bin Zayed secretly in the UAE and asked him to deny the warning account. The UAE Foreign Ministry declined to address the reported meeting but said it maintains direct communication with Israel and shares relevant intelligence. Netanyahu’s office did not immediately comment on that allegation.
Separately, France24 highlighted an investigation by Atlantic writer Vivian Salama reporting that Egypt’s intelligence chief, Abbas Kamel, made a discreet visit to Israel on Sept. 26, 2023, to warn about danger developing in Gaza.
The claims have prompted renewed calls for Netanyahu to be held accountable for the government’s failure to prevent the attack, including from Marine veteran Joslin Joseph in an opinion article published by The Hill.
