Bosnian Serb nationalist Milorad Dodik declared victory for his party in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s election on Sunday, after preliminary results showed his ally Željka Cvijanović with a commanding lead for the Serb seat in the country’s three-member presidency.
With nearly 90% of votes counted, Cvijanović, of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats, had more than 55% of the vote and led her nearest rival by about 30 percentage points. Dodik also said his party would hold a “vast majority” in the assembly of Republika Srpska, Bosnia’s Serb-majority entity.
Dodik, a pro-Russian separatist who did not appear on the ballot, dominated the campaign despite being barred from public office after his conviction last year for defying decisions by the international envoy overseeing the peace agreement that ended Bosnia’s 1992-95 war.
In the other presidential contests, Croatian Democratic Union candidate Darijana Filipović held a commanding lead for the Croat seat with more than 94% counted. Incumbent Bosniak presidency member Denis Bećirović of the Social Democratic Party led Bakir Izetbegović by fewer than three percentage points. Filipović and Bećirović both declared victory before counting was complete.
About 3.4 million people were eligible to vote for the presidency, national parliament and institutions in Bosnia’s two entities. The central election commission reported 1,432,269 ballots cast, putting turnout at 42%, about eight percentage points below the 2022 election.
