German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced about €1 billion in new military aid and €350 million for energy repairs during a visit to Kyiv on Sunday, as Russian drone attacks struck the Ukrainian capital.
Merz met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and pledged continued German support, including long-range weapons, combat drones and satellite technology. The energy funding is intended to help repair power infrastructure and strengthen emergency generation ahead of winter.
The two countries also advanced defense-industry cooperation involving air-defense systems, radar equipment and interceptor drones designed to counter fast, jet-powered Russian attack drones. Zelenskyy said Ukraine and Germany had concluded 15 agreements and documents valued at more than €8.5 billion, covering production, procurement and joint projects. German officials cited by The Korea Herald reported 14 agreements worth roughly $7.4 billion.
Air-raid sirens and explosions were heard during Merz’s visit. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a Russian strike hit the Northern Bridge across the Dnipro River, damaging the roadway and a hot-water system and injuring two people. France 24 reported attacks affecting three bridges.
Merz and Zelenskyy also visited the damaged National Academy of Sciences building, where at least two people were killed in an earlier drone strike. Merz urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt attacks on civilians and end the war, saying Germany would not be intimidated into withdrawing its support for Ukraine.
