The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has urged the Indian government to award the Ashoka Chakra to Captain Smit Machchhar, citing his actions during an alleged attack aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073.
According to The Indian Express, Machchhar was commanding the flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30 when his co-pilot allegedly attacked him. The Boeing 737 MAX, carrying 174 passengers, reportedly descended nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds during the struggle.
Despite suffering serious injuries, Machchhar fought back and unlocked the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to enter and overpower the co-pilot, the newspaper reported. Two off-duty or relief flydubai pilots travelling aboard the aircraft then took control and made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. All passengers and crew were reported safe.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi later spoke with Machchhar by video call and praised his courage, presence of mind and composure. Machchhar said he made a final effort to reach the cockpit door while injured and recited the Hanuman Chalisa during the ordeal.
The ABVP made its award request after an All-India Office Bearers Meeting in Itanagar. The Ashoka Chakra is India’s highest peacetime gallantry decoration and may be awarded to civilians for acts of bravery away from the battlefield.
