Ukraine has installed more than 12 specialized turrets in Kyiv to counter Russian jet-powered drones and plans to deploy eight more in the surrounding region, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. During a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Zelenskyy said dozens of the systems would eventually be placed at various locations.
Zelenskyy also announced that Ukraine has developed a small missile called Nika for use against Shahed-type jet-powered attack drones. The missile is being prepared for testing, and Zelenskyy said Ukrainian and German participants had responded positively to the project so far.
A separate Ukrainian-German interceptor, called Spys, has completed a successful test, according to Zelenskyy. The Kyiv Post reported that domestically produced missiles intended to fight jet drones are expected by late October.
Ukraine is also seeking ammunition for its F-16 fighter jets to engage Russian jet-powered drones. Zelenskyy said discussions on the ammunition had taken place with Germany and Poland. He also reiterated Ukraine’s effort to obtain German Taurus long-range cruise missiles during Merz’s visit to Kyiv on Oct. 4.
