Nigeria’s national voter register has grown to more than 103 million ahead of the 2027 general elections, Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman Joash Amupitan said Monday at a workshop for media executives in Abuja.
The increase followed a three-phase Continuous Voter Registration exercise that recorded 10,772,421 new registrations. The Punch reported that Amupitan said the final Automated Biometric Identification System cleanup had been completed, while Premium Times reported that the new registrations remained subject to biometric verification.
Amupitan said INEC had completed eight of the 14 major statutory activities in its election timetable. Nationwide collection of Permanent Voters’ Cards is scheduled to begin Friday, October 9. The commission has also introduced printable PVC technology and acquired 57,000 new Bimodal Voter Accreditation System machines, with upgrades including software hardening, battery optimisation and biometric calibration.
INEC is due to hold a national stakeholders’ meeting and press conference Tuesday, marking 100 days until the elections. The commission said it would provide updates on the voter register, candidate nominations, logistics and measures intended to protect the electoral process. Political parties, security agencies, diplomats, civil society groups, election observers and other stakeholders are expected to attend.
Presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, followed by governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections on February 6. INEC has published a final presidential candidate list covering 18 political parties, with 16 male and two female candidates.
