Kenya has confirmed its first Ebola case after a Kenyan man who recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo died in Nairobi, Health Secretary Aden Duale said Tuesday. The BBC identified the virus as the Bundibugyo strain.
The man had lived in the DRC for seven years and had been ill for about a month before travelling by road to Kampala, Uganda, and flying to Nairobi on Saturday, according to Al Jazeera. Kenyan authorities identified 28 contacts, including relatives and health workers who cared for him, and were tracing 23 passengers from the same flight.
Patrick Amoth, director-general of Kenya’s Ministry of Health, said the contacts would remain isolated for 21 days and be released if they test negative.
The case was linked to the DRC’s current Ebola outbreak, which was officially declared on May 15. Congolese government figures released Friday put the death toll above 4,000 and confirmed cases at 8,300 across seven provinces, making it the country’s worst Ebola outbreak. The World Health Organization has said the epidemic is “far from over.”
Uganda recorded 20 cases and two deaths earlier in the year before being declared Ebola-free in August.
