President Donald Trump announced Sunday that Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton will lead a new federal “Super Intelligence Force” tasked with coordinating the government’s approach to artificial intelligence.

Trump, who has directed the federal government to use the term “super intelligence” instead of artificial intelligence, said the group would work to maintain U.S. leadership in the technology. It will engage with consumers, public-interest and religious groups, critical-infrastructure providers and technology companies.

Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson, Pentagon technology chief Emil Michael and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor will also help lead the task force. Trump said its leaders will report to him and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.

According to reporting cited by TechCrunch and Engadget, the force has 120 days to prepare a report on AI’s risks and opportunities. Its charter also calls for plans to address AI-enabled threats while avoiding regulation that could hinder innovation and competition.

The announcement followed a White House meeting with executives from major AI companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Nvidia and xAI. Participating companies signed a nonbinding safety accord committing them to internal evaluations, independent external audits, board oversight and regular meetings on standards and best practices. Trump described those commitments as “morally binding.”

Apple was absent from the meeting, while Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella attended the luncheon but did not sign the accord, according to CNBC and The Hindu.
