Kenya confirmed its first-ever Ebola case on Tuesday after a Kenyan citizen who had been living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo died in Nairobi, Health Minister Aden Duale said.
The unnamed man fell ill about a month ago and received treatment in Congo before travelling by road to Kampala, Uganda, and flying to Nairobi on October 3. He was admitted to hospital with symptoms including fever, chills, fatigue, muscle pain and bleeding beneath the skin. Testing confirmed the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, and he died late Monday.
Kenyan authorities have identified 28 contacts, including relatives and healthcare workers. Officials are also tracing 23 passengers and four crew members who travelled on the same flight. Duale said no other tests had returned positive and that quarantine arrangements had been prepared for those considered at risk. The patient was due to receive a burial conducted under public-health protocols.
The case is linked to an outbreak declared in Congo in mid-May. The World Health Organization had recorded 8,463 cases and 4,082 deaths as of October 2. Uganda previously reported 20 cases and two deaths connected to the outbreak before being declared Ebola-free in August.
The Bundibugyo strain has no approved vaccine or specific treatment. Ebola spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person, living or dead.
