Right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro finished first in Brazil’s presidential election on Sunday, taking 47.03% of valid votes against 45.16% for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Neither secured the majority required for an outright victory, setting up a runoff on October 25.
The result defied pre-election polls that had shown Lula narrowly ahead. Bolsonaro received just over 56 million votes, compared with about 53.7 million for Lula, a gap of roughly 2.2 million votes.
Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, said the result showed that Brazilians wanted change and described it as the end of the Workers’ Party era. Lula acknowledged that he had expected to win in the first round but said the runoff would begin a new campaign offering voters a direct choice between the candidates.
The right also made broad gains in congressional, Senate, gubernatorial and state contests. Jair Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party expanded its position in the Senate and performed strongly in other races, giving his son additional momentum entering the second round.
Analysts cited support from evangelical voters, concerns about crime and living costs, and dissatisfaction with Lula’s campaign as factors in Flávio Bolsonaro’s stronger-than-expected showing. The runoff campaign will now focus on voters who backed eliminated candidates, though several of those candidates have said they will endorse neither finalist.
