The U.S. military struck a boat in the Caribbean Sea on Sunday, killing four people it described as “narco-terrorists,” U.S. Southern Command said.
Southern Command said intelligence showed the go-fast vessel was involved in drug trafficking and operating along established smuggling routes. Footage released by the military on X appeared to show an explosion destroying a moving boat, but the command did not publicly provide evidence that the vessel was carrying drugs.
The strike was the latest in a campaign launched by President Donald Trump’s administration in September 2025. At least 235 people have been killed in 70 U.S. attacks on vessels in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific since the campaign began, according to The Hindu and Al Jazeera.
Trump has characterized the campaign against Latin American cartels as an “armed conflict” and said the strikes are needed to curb drug trafficking and fatal overdoses in the United States. United Nations experts have warned that the boat strikes may violate international law and human rights principles and could amount to crimes against humanity.
The administration has also pursued agreements with Latin American governments to expand joint operations against criminal groups. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said in August that Colombia, Guatemala and Honduras had agreed to permit joint operations on their territory, though Guatemala disputed his account. Ecuador began similar missions with the United States in March.
