South Africa’s petrol price will rise above R30 a litre for the first time on Wednesday as higher international oil and fuel costs drive increases across several countries.
The Central Energy Fund said 95 unleaded petrol in Gauteng will increase by R3.33 to a record R30.25 a litre on 7 October. The price of 93 petrol will rise by R3.12 to R29.88, while diesel will increase by between R2.84 and R3.24 a litre. Illuminating paraffin will also become more expensive.
South Africa’s mineral and petroleum resources department said Brent crude averaged more than $101 a barrel during the review period, up from $87.89, citing US-Iran tensions, uncertainty over oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, higher shipping costs and shrinking inventories. The rand’s slight appreciation provided only marginal relief.
Fuel costs have also climbed sharply elsewhere. In the United States, AAA data cited by CNBC showed average diesel prices reached $6.32 a gallon on Tuesday, up 68% since late February, while gasoline rose 47% to $4.37. The Group of Seven agreed to release diesel stocks, and President Donald Trump temporarily broadened permitted use of cheaper red-dyed diesel.
Nigeria’s average petrol and diesel prices rose by 80.8% and 91.8%, respectively, between January and 22 September, according to a priceandpromo report cited by The Punch. Pakistan raised petrol by Re0.88 a litre but cut high-speed diesel by Rs1.88, while Colombia continued freezing domestic fuel prices, shifting the cost gap to its fuel-price stabilization fund.
