Niamh O’Brien, a leading Irish dancer and the wife of performer Michael Flatley, has died aged 52 following an illness.
A family representative said O’Brien died peacefully at Beacon Hospital in Dublin, where staff had cared for her over the past few weeks. Her family asked for privacy, and funeral arrangements are to be announced.
Flatley announced her death on social media, saying: “My heart is broken. I have lost my beautiful wife, Niamh, and my best friend.” He described O’Brien as “the most loving mother, wife and person” and thanked people for their support.
Originally from County Meath, O’Brien competed at an elite level as a teenager and placed fourth in the world championships at age 17, according to The Irish Times. She later performed professionally in Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, Feet of Flames and Celtic Tiger. She was known for playing the lead role of Saoirse in Lord of the Dance.
O’Brien and Flatley married in County Cork in October 2006. They had one son, Michael St James, who was born in 2007.
