Kenya has confirmed its first Ebola case after a Kenyan man who had been living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo traveled to Nairobi and died, health officials said. Testing at Kenya’s National Virology Reference Laboratory and the Kenya Medical Research Institute identified the Bundibugyo strain.
The patient had been ill before traveling by road from Congo to Kampala, Uganda, and then flying commercially to Nairobi on Saturday. Kenyan Health Minister Aden Duale said the man passed airport screening before a relative took him to Nairobi Hospital with fever, chills and bleeding beneath the skin. He was isolated and died late Monday, October 5. His burial was conducted under protocols intended to prevent transmission.
Authorities have quarantined and are monitoring relatives and healthcare workers who had contact with him. They are also tracing 23 passengers and four crew members from his flight. Duale said medication may have masked the patient’s symptoms during airport screening; Ugandan officials said he had a normal temperature at Entebbe airport.
Kenya notified the World Health Organization on October 6. The WHO and Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention are supporting the response, while WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus recommended against imposing travel restrictions on outbreak-affected countries. Kenya is the fourth country to report a case linked to the current outbreak centered in eastern Congo, after Congo, Uganda and France.
