Ten people were injured in a knife attack at a school in Ostroleka, northeastern Poland, on Wednesday, local and regional officials said. Police detained a 19-year-old student suspected of carrying out the attack shortly after it occurred.
Masovian Regional Governor Mariusz Frankowski said the injured included five students, two teachers, two bystanders and the suspect, who had harmed himself. Nine people were taken to hospital, but none was in life-threatening condition, he said.
Police said the student attacked people with a machete. Bomb disposal specialists were examining the suspect’s backpack, and authorities had not said whether anything had been found inside.
Early accounts differed on the casualty count. The town’s mayor reported 10 injured, including the suspect, while some initial news reports said seven or eight people had been hurt. An Associated Press headline described nine victims injured by the student, consistent with the official total of 10 when the wounded suspect is included.
