Israel marked the third anniversary of the Hamas-led Oct. 7, 2023 attacks amid heightened security and renewed vows to pursue those who took part.

Israeli officials said the military had killed about two-thirds of the attackers and estimated that roughly 2,000 remained alive. Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered the military to track down all remaining perpetrators, according to reports in The Times of Israel, Ynetnews and China Daily Asia.

A series of commemorations began this week for the attacks, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 were abducted to Gaza. At an official ceremony at Jerusalem’s Mount Herzl military cemetery, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was interrupted by Yaakov Godo, whose son Tom was killed on Oct. 7. Godo accused Netanyahu of failing to protect those who died.

Families of victims have continued to demand an official commission of inquiry into the security and intelligence failures that preceded the attacks. Netanyahu has not opened such an inquiry, The Irish Times reported.

The anniversary comes after three years of regional conflict that expanded beyond Gaza. Israel faced attacks from Hezbollah in Lebanon, Iran-backed militias in Iraq and Syria, and the Houthis in Yemen, while Israeli operations killed senior figures in Hamas and Hezbollah, including Yahya Sinwar, Ismail Haniyeh, Mohammed Deif and Hassan Nasrallah.
