Israelis gathered at attack sites and memorials on Wednesday to mark three years since the Hamas-led assault of October 7, 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage.

At the Nova music festival site near Gaza, families observed a moment of silence at dawn and paid tribute before portraits of festivalgoers and security personnel killed in the attack. More than 300 people died at the festival. Mourners also assembled at Kfar Aza, where they watched an Israeli flag being raised, while people elsewhere gathered at intersections and bomb shelters.

In Tel Aviv, activists placed outlines representing more than 1,100 bodies on a beach and called for accountability over the failure to prevent the attack. The commemorations came ahead of Israel’s October 27 election, the country’s first since the assault. Former prime minister Naftali Bennett, who is challenging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, described the attack as a “colossal failure” of the state.

Israeli strikes continued in Gaza during the anniversary. Deutsche Welle cited Palestinian officials reporting two people killed, while AFP, carried by the Taipei Times, reported that Gaza officials said three were killed. Gaza’s Health Ministry says Israel’s ensuing war has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians.

A vigil was also held opposite Downing Street in London by British Jewish organisations. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reaffirmed Germany’s support for Israel while calling for a political settlement involving a Palestinian state alongside Israel.
