Nigeria’s air force said all 25 people aboard a military aircraft were killed when it crashed Monday in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State.
The Nigerian Air Force revised an initial government count of 32 people, saying a review of the manifest showed that NAF 931 carried five crew members and 20 passengers. Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo had initially said 25 passengers and seven crew members were aboard. The air force released the victims’ names Tuesday and said no survivors had been found.
The ATR-42 aircraft was flying from Benin in Edo State to Lagos on what the air force described as a routine mission. Keyamo said contact was lost at about 9:13 a.m. The wreckage was later located in a swampy area near a naval base, where search-and-rescue teams worked to account for those aboard.
President Bola Tinubu declared three days of national mourning and ordered flags flown at half-mast. He offered condolences to the victims’ families and directed the air force to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash.
Air force chief Sunday Aneke also ordered a comprehensive investigation. The air force urged the public to avoid speculation and unverified information and to respect the privacy of the victims’ families.
