Israelis marked three years since the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack on Wednesday as Israeli strikes and gunfire killed Palestinians across Gaza despite a ceasefire reached a year ago.
Families gathered at dawn at the Nova music festival site near the Gaza border, where 348 people were killed in the attack. Another commemoration was planned at Hostage Square in Tel Aviv. Hamas-led militants killed about 1,200 people and took 251 hostages in 2023. This was the first anniversary with no hostages remaining in Gaza after exchanges with Hamas and the recovery of the last Israeli hostage’s remains in January.
In Gaza, the reported death toll from Wednesday’s attacks rose to at least five, according to Middle East Eye. Palestinian medical and civil defence officials said those killed included Civil Defence volunteer Mohamed Tamous, who was travelling to assist wounded people near Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza; a 60-year-old man and a 17-year-old in the Khan Younis area; and a teenager who died from wounds sustained in September. An air strike on a house in the Khan Younis refugee camp caused another death and several injuries, Middle East Eye reported, citing Al Jazeera.
The October 2025 ceasefire ended large-scale fighting and enabled hostage-prisoner exchanges, but Israeli attacks have continued. Israel retains control of most of Gaza, while Hamas remains armed and controls part of the territory. The sides remain divided over Hamas’s disarmament and an Israeli troop withdrawal.
