A one-and-a-half-year-old child was killed and at least eight people were injured when a multi-storey building collapsed in northeast Delhi’s Seemapuri area on Wednesday, October 7, according to The Hindu. Rescue operations were continuing, with several people suspected to be trapped beneath the debris.
The Delhi Fire Service received a call about the collapse at about 3:30 p.m. and dispatched fire tenders. The Hindu reported that the front portion of the building collapsed, while Scroll.in said debris also buried portions of two or three adjoining houses. Early reports differed on whether the structure had four or five storeys.
District Magistrate Ajay Kumar said five people were trapped under the debris, Scroll.in reported, citing PTI. Officials said the cause would be investigated. Residents told PTI that cracks had appeared in the building after tremors from an earthquake in Uttarakhand were felt in the capital on Tuesday, but authorities had not confirmed a connection.
Delhi Traffic Police said traffic was affected around Seemapuri Gol Chakkar, DLF Bhopura and adjoining roads. It urged the public to avoid the area, refrain from parking or gathering near the collapse site, and keep lanes open for ambulances and rescue vehicles.
