An 18-year-old driver has been charged with nine offences after a car struck a crowd of Newcastle Knights supporters in the Wallsend suburb of Newcastle, Australia, injuring 10 people.

Fans had gathered on Saturday to farewell the rugby league team before its National Rugby League grand final against the Sydney Roosters in Sydney. Authorities said three children were among those injured.

Six people remained at John Hunter Hospital, including two in serious condition and four in stable condition, the Hunter New England Local Health District said. A five-year-old girl who had been placed in an induced coma with critical injuries had stabilised. A 67-year-old man was also among those seriously injured.

Police arrested the driver, identified in court as Indika Bambrick Samarasinghe, and took him to hospital for mandatory testing. He was later charged with offences including dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligent driving and causing bodily harm by misconduct.

Samarasinghe did not apply for release during a brief court appearance on Sunday and was formally refused bail. He is due to appear at Newcastle Local Court on October 15.

Investigators said they did not believe the crash was deliberate or terrorism-related. Newcastle Lord Mayor Gavin Morris told ABC that the driver, a Knights supporter, had been revving the car before losing control and entering the crowd.
