A German court ordered former foreign intelligence chief August Hanning to remain in pretrial detention Wednesday following his arrest on suspicion of treason and espionage. His former chief of staff, identified as Manfred D., was also arrested and is accused of supplying him with classified files.
Federal prosecutors suspect Hanning, 80, obtained state secrets through contacts with the former Bundesnachrichtendienst employee and, on at least one occasion, used classified intelligence to prepare an analysis for an officer of a foreign intelligence service. Hanning led the BND from 1998 to 2005 and later worked as a private security consultant.
The former employee allegedly sold Hanning about 2,000 highly classified documents over 12 years. Reporting by German public broadcasters and Süddeutsche Zeitung said the files included sensitive assessments of Iran’s nuclear program, Russia’s military and the war in Ukraine, along with intelligence supplied by foreign partner agencies. Some were reportedly weekly BND briefings prepared for the German government.
The investigation is examining whether classified information was passed to foreign intelligence services. Deutsche Welle reported that the BND has begun assessing the potential damage and consulting partner agencies about whether their information may have been compromised. No evidence cited publicly has established that the material reached Russian or Chinese intelligence services.
