Bernadette Greene-Placentia, a Democratic candidate for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District, says she was raped in August while trying to repair a campaign sign in a parking lot in Sun City, north of Phoenix.
Greene-Placentia told the Phoenix New Times that she was walking toward the sign at about 2 a.m. when an unknown assailant attacked and subdued her. She said she regained consciousness while she was being raped. Her campaign told ABC News that the alleged assault occurred Aug. 14.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to ABC News that a report was filed Aug. 31 and that an investigation is ongoing. The office declined to provide further details.
Greene-Placentia, who is seeking to unseat Republican Rep. Abe Hamadeh, said she disclosed the alleged assault publicly because she wanted to advocate for women who have experienced sexual violence. Her campaign said she also wanted other survivors to know they are not alone and asked that her privacy be respected.
Campaign manager Isaiah Lopez told ABC News that Greene-Placentia was absent for two days after the alleged attack and appeared distraught at a campaign event several days later, where she told staff members what had happened.
Hamadeh called the account disturbing and urged authorities to investigate thoroughly, obtain any available camera footage and prosecute the crime.
