A Royal Navy intelligence specialist accused of attempting to pass classified information to Russia was remanded in custody after appearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
Teddy Young, 24, faces two charges under the National Security Act 2023. Prosecutors allege that between November 26, 2024, and May 21, 2025, he obtained, copied, recorded or retained protected information intending to benefit a foreign power, and engaged in conduct preparing to disclose protected information.
The Guardian reported that Young, a junior sailor with high-level security clearance, allegedly accessed secret defence and intelligence information after serving aboard a warship. He is also accused of drafting a Russian-language message containing classified information and trying to contact Russian authorities directly.
Young was arrested at his Bedfordshire home on Tuesday following an investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing London. He had previously been arrested in May 2025, suspended and relieved of his duties, according to The Guardian.
Young spoke in court only to confirm his identity and address. No bail application was made, and he was ordered to appear before a specialist judge at the Old Bailey on October 16.
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, called the allegations “very serious charges against a serving member of the armed forces.” Police said the case was not connected to an investigation involving RAF Fairford.
