A 2.5-metre satirical statue depicting US President Donald Trump naked and coated in gold went on display Tuesday inside the European Parliament building in Strasbourg, France.
Created by Danish artist Jens Galschiøt, the sculpture is titled “The Orange Plague” and is also known as “King of Injustice.” It portrays Trump holding a golf club while sitting on the shoulders of a much smaller man who appears to be struggling under his weight. The work is covered in 23-carat gold leaf, according to the artist.
Text accompanying the statue describes the figure as willing to do anything to help the burdened man except get off his back. Galschiøt said the work criticizes Trump’s environmental and foreign policies, including his approach to climate change.
Danish left-wing member of the European Parliament Per Clausen sponsored the exhibition, which was approved under Parliament rules for displays backed by lawmakers. Clausen defended the installation, saying public figures should be able to tolerate political satire.
The display also drew objections. Belgian MEP Barbara Bonte called it disrespectful to the president of a friendly country, while Hungarian MEP Ernő Schaller-Baross accused Parliament of hypocrisy. Irish MEP Barry Cowen, of the centrist Renew Europe group, described it as “silly and objectionable” and formally complained to Parliament.
The statue was placed at an intersection connecting two parliamentary buildings and was scheduled to remain through Thursday. Trump had not publicly commented on it.
