Twenty prospective National Youth Service Corps members abducted while travelling from Oyo State to orientation camps have been freed after one week in captivity, police and local news reports said. An additional civilian was also released.
Gunmen seized the prospective corps members on October 1 along the Owerri-Onitsha Road near Umunoha in Imo State. Police spokesperson Ani Iniedu said security agencies rescued them on October 7 following sustained search-and-rescue operations. They were taken to the Department of State Services hospital in Owerri for medical assessment and treatment.
Imo State Police Commissioner Audu Bosso said the operation involved the police, military, DSS and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. He told Channels Television that pressure from security forces forced the abductors to release the captives. Bosso said he was not aware of any ransom payment, while authorities continued searching for the perpetrators.
Reports said the abductors had initially demanded ₦50 million per captive before reducing the demand to ₦5 million each. No arrests have been announced.
NYSC Director-General Brigadier-General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu visited the victims at the hospital. Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma praised the security agencies and said officials had limited public information during the operation to avoid endangering the captives or compromising the investigation.
