Kenya has confirmed its first Ebola case after a Kenyan citizen who had been living in the Democratic Republic of Congo died in Nairobi on October 5.
The patient, who had reportedly been ill for about a month, traveled by road from Congo to Kampala, Uganda, before flying commercially to Nairobi on October 3. He passed airport health screening but was later admitted to Nairobi Hospital with fever, chills and bleeding beneath the skin, according to Kenyan Health Minister Aden Duale. He was isolated, and laboratory tests confirmed infection with Bundibugyo virus, one of the viruses that cause Ebola disease.
The patient was buried under protocols intended to prevent transmission. Kenya notified the World Health Organization on October 6.
Authorities began monitoring family members and healthcare workers and tracing 23 passengers and four crew members from the flight. By October 8, the Health Ministry had identified 57 contacts, according to The Rio Times. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said it was sending a team to support Kenya’s response, while WHO recommended against travel restrictions.
Kenya also strengthened screening at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Travelers arriving from 10 African countries are being routed through a dedicated gate for enhanced checks and asked to disclose recent illness and medication use. Officials said medication may have masked the patient’s symptoms during airport screening.
