Veteran Indian actor and filmmaker Nana Patekar died in Goa on Thursday at the age of 75, his son Malhar Patekar confirmed.
Patekar was found unconscious at his home and taken to Manipal Hospital, where doctors attempted CPR for about 45 minutes before pronouncing him dead at 5:20 a.m., hospital doctor Shekhar Salkar told ANI. Several outlets reported that he suffered a cardiac arrest, while his son said he died of natural causes. Al Jazeera, citing officials, reported that a medico-legal case had been registered and a post-mortem examination would be conducted.
Born in Maharashtra in 1951, Patekar worked for nearly five decades across Hindi and Marathi film and theatre. He made his film debut in *Gaman* in 1978 and became known for intense, often volatile characters as well as comic roles. His notable films included *Salaam Bombay!*, *Parinda*, *Krantiveer*, *Khamoshi: The Musical*, *Ab Tak Chhappan*, *Welcome* and *Raajneeti*. He also directed and starred in *Prahaar*.
Patekar won three National Film Awards, for *Parinda*, *Krantiveer* and *Agni Sakshi*, and received the Padma Shri in 2013 for his contribution to cinema.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Patekar’s versatility and said his characters would be remembered for generations. Actors including Akshay Kumar, Manisha Koirala and Naseeruddin Shah also paid tribute to his performances and distinctive presence.
