Veteran actor Nana Patekar died Thursday at age 75 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his family home in Goa, The Indian Express reported. His son, Malhar Patekar, confirmed the death, describing it as due to natural causes. Reports said the actor was taken to a nearby hospital at about 5:20 a.m. and received CPR for 45 minutes but could not be revived.
Hours before his death, Patekar reportedly sent a message to a friend at 2:30 a.m. saying he was unwell.
Four days earlier, Patekar attended the inauguration of a Samraat Club International theater club in Dona Paula, Goa, where he spoke about performing arts and urged artists to continue seeking new ideas. Reflecting on mortality and purpose, he said everyone must die someday and questioned whether he had done what he wanted and given something back beyond his family and home.
Patekar, whose career began in Marathi theater, became a prominent figure in Hindi and Marathi cinema. He never entered electoral politics but maintained relationships with leaders across party lines and was approached more than once to contest elections. He declined a BJP offer to run in the 2014 Lok Sabha election.
He also publicly challenged political leaders. In 2022, he questioned Eknath Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis about Maharashtra’s political turmoil, corruption, accountability and the divisions caused among families by party splits.
