Hurricane Isaias strengthened into the first Atlantic hurricane of the season as it moved toward the U.S. Gulf Coast, prompting emergency declarations and offshore production shutdowns.
The National Hurricane Center said the storm had maximum sustained winds of 80 mph and was about 385 miles southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River on Thursday morning, according to Fast Company. An earlier advisory cited by NPR placed Isaias about 460 miles south-southwest of the Mississippi River, moving east-northeast at 9 mph with sustained winds of 75 mph.
Forecasters expected the hurricane to make landfall between the Mississippi coast and the Florida Panhandle late Friday or early Saturday. Heavy rain, flash flooding and strong winds were forecast along parts of the Gulf Coast. Residents from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle were urged to monitor updates and prepare their hurricane plans.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 25 counties, while Alabama also declared an emergency for dozens of counties. In Central Alabama, forecasts called for wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph and possible flooding.
Oil and gas producers temporarily halted about 25% of Gulf oil production, or roughly 511,000 barrels per day, NPR reported. Eight of the region’s 371 manned oil platforms were evacuated.
