All 25 people aboard a Nigerian military aircraft were killed when it crashed in southern Nigeria’s Ondo State on Monday, the Nigerian Air Force said after revising an initial toll of 32.
The Air Force said aircraft NAF 931 was carrying five crew members and 20 passengers on a routine mission from Benin in Edo State to Lagos. Officials lost contact with it at about 9:13 a.m., and the wreckage was later located in a swampy area near a naval base in Igbokoda. No survivors were found.
The initial figure came from Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, who said preliminary information indicated that 25 passengers and seven crew members were aboard. The Air Force said Tuesday that a review of the manifest established the lower total. It released the victims’ names, identifying 19 of them as military personnel.
President Bola Tinubu ordered a full investigation into the crash, declared three days of national mourning and directed that flags be flown at half-mast. He described the deaths as a painful moment for the armed forces and the country and offered condolences to the victims’ families.
Air Force chief Sunday Aneke also directed a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the accident. Ghana’s government and Nigeria’s Northern Governors’ Forum were among those offering condolences.
