Samsung Electronics forecast record third-quarter operating profit of 107.4 trillion won ($80.1 billion), nearly nine times the year-earlier level, as demand for memory chips used in artificial intelligence infrastructure boosted its semiconductor business.
The company’s preliminary results showed quarterly revenue of about 195 trillion won, up nearly 127% from a year earlier. Despite setting records, both profit and revenue fell short of analysts’ elevated expectations, according to the Taipei Times.
Demand for high-bandwidth memory used with AI accelerators, along with flash memory and low-power chips, has tightened supplies and lifted earnings for memory producers. Samsung has also been gaining ground in high-bandwidth memory while expanding production capacity.
The chip windfall contrasts with pressure on Samsung’s mobile operations. Brokerages cited by The Korea Herald estimate that the mobile and networks businesses lost between 900 billion won and 1.9 trillion won during the quarter, after a 700 billion won operating loss in the second quarter. Analysts attributed the pressure to higher memory and component costs that were not fully passed on to smartphone buyers. Samsung has not yet published divisional results.
Samsung is scheduled to release its full third-quarter financial statement, including performance by business division, on Oct. 29.
