Christa Pike is walking and speaking in a Nashville hospital after surviving Tennessee’s attempt to execute her by lethal injection on September 30, according to her legal team.
Attorney Stephen Ferrell told the BBC that Pike, 50, had begun walking short distances around her hospital room. He said she remained mentally “foggy,” sometimes losing her train of thought, and had limited use of her arms because of significant injuries. Her lawyers said her prognosis remained unclear and that she could face a lengthy recovery.
Pike received two doses of pentobarbital at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution, but the execution was stopped after she remained conscious and had a heartbeat. She was taken to a hospital, where she was initially unconscious and on a ventilator. Tennessee prison officials have declined to disclose medical details, citing privacy laws.
A Davidson County court has ordered Tennessee to preserve evidence related to the execution attempt. Pike’s attorneys had sought retention of items and records including needles, syringes, drug information, execution logs, surveillance footage and communications. They allege that intravenous lines may have been improperly placed, causing the drug to enter tissue instead of her bloodstream; Tennessee’s Department of Correction has maintained that personnel followed protocol.
Gov. Bill Lee ordered an independent review and canceled Tennessee’s remaining scheduled executions for 2026. Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer.
