Israelis marked three years since the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 attack as negotiations over Gaza remained deadlocked and Israeli strikes continued despite a year-old ceasefire.
Militants killed about 1,200 people and took 251 hostages in the attack. Commemorations on Wednesday included a vigil at the Nova music festival site, where 348 people were killed, and an event at Hostage Square in Tel Aviv. It was the first anniversary with no hostages remaining in Gaza after exchanges involving Palestinian prisoners and detainees; the last Israeli hostage’s remains were recovered in January.
The October 2025 U.S.-brokered ceasefire ended large-scale fighting and increased aid deliveries, but its broader provisions remain unfulfilled. Hamas remains armed and controls part of Gaza, while Israel retains control of most of the territory and continues military operations. Israel says it targets Hamas members and accuses the group of ceasefire violations. Israel demands Hamas disarm before further withdrawals, while Hamas says disarmament cannot be completed while Israeli attacks continue.
Gaza health authorities say more than 74,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war began and more than 1,400 since the ceasefire. Palestinian medical sources reported at least four more deaths in Israeli attacks on Wednesday, including a Civil Defence volunteer and a 17-year-old.
Conditions remain severe for Gaza’s displaced population. Physicians for Human Rights Israel reported that the territory has no fully functioning hospital or MRI scanner, while many residents continue living in tents and damaged buildings.
