Students, teachers and parents marched across France on Tuesday in the largest day of a nationwide protest movement demanding action on teacher shortages, inadequate resources, long school days and deteriorating buildings.
Demonstrations began peacefully in cities including Marseille, Nantes and Lyon, while protesters blockaded hundreds of schools and some education authorities moved classes online. The Education Ministry estimated that 891 schools had suspended at least some classes, while the High School Students Union said 1,800 high schools were blockaded or expected to close.
The protests began in the Paris suburbs in September and later spread nationwide. Authorities say parts of the movement have developed into urban violence. Education Minister Édouard Geffray said 24 schools had been burned or ransacked. In Lens on Monday, a 15-year-old lost a hand and part of his lower arm after reportedly picking up a police dispersal grenade during clashes.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu told parliament that at least 215 students, 85 education workers and 715 police officers and gendarmes had been injured since the unrest began. He condemned attacks on schools and staff while denying that the government had ordered police repression.
Lecornu instructed ministers to prepare proposals by the end of October addressing replacement teachers, school-building repairs, the length of the school day and lunch breaks. Protests continued on Thursday, with students saying the government had not adequately answered their demands.
