At least 30 people were killed and 18 wounded when a Russian strike hit two passenger buses in Kramatorsk, eastern Ukraine, on Thursday morning, according to Ukrainian regional authorities.
Officials said the buses were traveling along a city street when the strike occurred at about 10 a.m. A residential building was also hit, according to Deutsche Welle. Images released by prosecutors showed a burned-out bus and bodies at the scene.
Ukrainian authorities gave differing preliminary accounts of the weapon used. The Donetsk regional prosecutor’s office said Russia likely used a UMPB D-30SN glide munition, while Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office reported that Kramatorsk had been struck with a multiple-launch rocket system, according to Militarnyi. Investigators opened a pretrial war-crimes case.
Donetsk regional Governor Vadym Filashkin accused Russian forces of deliberately targeting civilian transport and ordered public transit suspended in Kramatorsk and neighboring Sloviansk to protect passengers and drivers. Russia has previously denied targeting civilians in Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy offered condolences to the victims’ families and said the attack would “not go unanswered.” Kramatorsk is a major Ukrainian-held city in the Donetsk region, close to the front line.
