SpaceX’s Crew-12 astronauts returned to Earth on Thursday after an eight-month mission aboard the International Space Station, completing a parachute-assisted splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off California.
NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, French astronaut Sophie Adenot and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev had departed the station on Wednesday. All four emerged from the capsule within an hour of landing and boarded a recovery ship before continuing by helicopter toward shore, according to an Associated Press report published by Fortune.
The crew spent 237 days aboard the ISS, according to Le Monde. During the mission, Meir completed four spacewalks, while Adenot made three for station maintenance and upgrades. France24 reported that Adenot became the first French woman to walk in space and set a record for the longest continuous orbital stay by a European astronaut.
Their return had been delayed by about three weeks while their replacement capsule underwent repairs. Crew-12 launched in February to replace four station occupants who returned early after NASA astronaut Mike Fincke became ill.
“We are so excited to be back on Planet Earth after an incredible mission on the International Space Station,” Meir radioed after splashdown. Seven astronauts from the United States, Russia and Canada remain aboard the station.
