President Donald Trump has established a three-member “committee of inquiry” to investigate allegations that Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook made false statements connected to mortgage documents, the White House announced Friday.
The committee will examine the allegations and report to Trump on whether there is cause to remove Cook from the Fed’s Board of Governors. According to a presidential memorandum dated Wednesday, its members are the assistant to the president for economic policy, the chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the head of the Office of Government Ethics.
An in-person hearing is scheduled for Nov. 5 at the White House. The proceeding will not be public but will be transcribed, CBS News reported. The memorandum says Cook may submit a written statement, present evidence and witness statements, appear at the hearing and face questions from the committee or authorized representatives, including Justice Department personnel.
Cook’s lawyers, Abbe Lowell and Norm Eisen, said she welcomes an opportunity to present the facts and clear her name but questioned whether the process would be objective. They said an impartial review would find she did not commit mortgage fraud and that there is no cause to remove her.
Trump first sought to remove Cook in 2025 after Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte accused her of misrepresenting properties on mortgage documents before she joined the Fed. Cook sued, and courts allowed her to remain in office while the dispute continued. MarketWatch reported that Cook has not been charged with a crime.
