YouTuber Dhruv Rathee and actor-activist Prakash Raj joined Citizens for Justice and Peace founder Abhijeet Dipke at a protest in Bengaluru on Thursday demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
The demonstration at Freedom Park was organized as a “people’s tribunal” for people described by organizers as victims of the revision process in Karnataka. Participants, including women and students, called for the exercise to be scrapped and carried signs referring to missing names and demanding Kumar’s resignation. Organizers also announced a subsequent “chappal protest” in solidarity with women.
Rathee told protesters he had not come for “regime change” and accused the Election Commission of having “zero transparency” and “zero accountability.” Raj alleged that the revision threatened citizens’ dignity and rights, and accused Kumar of acting at the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
The protest followed a Karnataka Youth Congress torchlight procession at Freedom Park on Wednesday night. That demonstration condemned the arrest of opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and also demanded Kumar’s resignation. Protesters burned an effigy of the commissioner and attempted to surround the Election Commission office, after which police detained hundreds of Youth Congress workers, according to The Indian Express.
