A gilded sculpture depicting U.S. President Donald Trump nude was displayed this week inside the European Parliament building in Strasbourg, France.
Created by Danish artist Jens Galschiøt, the roughly 2.5-metre-tall work is titled *The Orange Plague* and is also known as *King of Injustice*. It portrays Trump seated on the shoulders of a much smaller, burdened man while holding a golf club and scales of justice. The copper sculpture is covered with 23-carat gold leaf, according to the artist.
An inscription on its base presents the figure as saying he is sitting on a man who is sinking under his weight and would do anything to help except step down from his back. Galschiøt described the sculpture as a satirical protest against Trump’s environmental and foreign policies.
The exhibition was sponsored by Danish member of the European Parliament Per Clausen of The Left and approved by Parliament’s cross-party administrative body under rules for MEP-sponsored displays. It was not an official European Parliament artwork.
The display drew objections from lawmakers including Belgian MEP Barbara Bonte, Hungarian MEP Ernő Schaller-Baross and Irish MEP Barry Cowen. Clausen defended the exhibition, saying politicians should not accept “fear and self-censorship.”
The sculpture was unveiled Tuesday and scheduled to remain through Thursday. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico called for its removal Thursday, according to The Hill, but it had already been taken down. Trump and the White House had not publicly responded.
