Veteran Indian actor and filmmaker Nana Patekar died Thursday after being found unresponsive at his home in Dona Paula, Goa. He was widely reported to be 75, although Goa Police records listed him as 76.
Dr Shekhar Salkar of Manipal Hospital said an emergency team began CPR at Patekar’s home and continued while taking him to the hospital, but he could not be revived. He was pronounced dead at 5:20 a.m. Salkar described the incident as a cardiac arrest but said its underlying cause was not yet known. Patekar’s son, Malhar, said his father died of natural causes.
Goa Police registered an unnatural-death case and began an inquest, describing the step as standard protocol because Patekar was declared brought dead. Officials said a post-mortem examination would determine the cause of death.
Patekar’s remains were flown to Pune, where Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid his respects before the actor was cremated with state honours at his farm in Donje village.
Born Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra in 1951, he worked for nearly five decades in Hindi and Marathi film and theatre. He debuted in the 1978 film *Gaman* and became known for performances in *Salaam Bombay!*, *Parinda*, *Krantiveer*, *Khamoshi: The Musical*, *Ab Tak Chhappan* and the comedy *Welcome*. He won three National Film Awards and received the Padma Shri in 2013. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and actors including Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher and Manisha Koirala led public tributes.
