Syria is considering military assistance for Saudi Arabia as the kingdom confronts an escalating series of Houthi attacks from Yemen, according to Reuters and Axios. Reuters reported that options include defensive support to protect Saudi territory and a possible deployment of Syrian forces to help Saudi-backed Yemeni troops fight the Iran-aligned group.
The discussions follow missile and drone attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and Abha International Airport in southern Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority said three people were killed and 36 wounded in attacks on the two airports. RTÉ reported, citing the authority, that an Egyptian and an Algerian were killed at Abha and a Sudanese national at Riyadh. Sky News and France24 separately reported that three Saudi citizens were killed at the Riyadh airport.
The Houthis later claimed another ballistic-missile attack on the Riyadh airport, but Saudi authorities did not immediately confirm that claim. The group warned airlines to avoid Saudi airspace.
The Saudi-led coalition, which supports Yemen’s internationally recognized government, blamed the Houthis for the airport strikes and vowed a response. It said it had retaliated against 82 military targets, including missile facilities, command centers and communications systems. The renewed fighting has displaced more than 200,000 people inside Yemen since July, according to the United Nations.
