Kenya has confirmed its first Ebola death after a Kenyan national returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo, where an outbreak has caused more than 4,000 deaths and over 8,000 confirmed cases.
Kenya’s Health Minister Aden Duale said the patient had lived in Congo for several years and became ill about a month before returning home. He travelled by road through Uganda and then flew to Nairobi, passing airport screening before his condition worsened. He died days after reaching the Kenyan capital and tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain.
Eight relatives and 21 health workers have been quarantined, while authorities are tracing 23 passengers and four crew members from the flight he took from Uganda. Those identified will be monitored in isolation for 21 days. Kenyan authorities have also introduced screening at airports.
The outbreak was declared in eastern Congo in mid-May. France24 reported that Kenya is the fourth country to record a case during the current outbreak. Uganda had previously reported cases and deaths but was later declared free of the disease by the World Health Organization.
Health services in Congo are under additional strain from staffing and pay problems. An Ebola treatment center has also been burned down, according to AP. France plans to increase funding for the response amid fears of a resurgence, Reuters reported.
