BJP wins Nandigram and Rejinagar in West Bengal bypolls

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party won both West Bengal Assembly by-elections held on October 6, retaining Nandigram and capturing Rejinagar when votes were counted Friday.

In Nandigram, BJP candidate Hasi Rani Rath defeated Congress candidate Milan Pradhan by more than 122,000 votes. Rath is the mother of Chandranath Rath, an aide to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari who was killed after the state election in May. The Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress faction supported Pradhan after its candidate withdrew.

In Rejinagar, BJP candidate Shankharavh Sarkar won by more than 75,000 votes. Aam Janata Unnayan Party candidate Golam Nabi Azad finished second, ahead of Congress and the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC faction. Rejinagar has a predominantly Muslim electorate.

The by-elections were required because Adhikari and AJUP chief Humayun Kabir had each won two constituencies in the state election. Adhikari retained Bhabanipur and vacated Nandigram, while Kabir retained Naoda and gave up Rejinagar.

Opposition parties alleged intimidation, booth irregularities and restrictions on their campaigners and polling agents. Pradhan, who had been granted interim bail in cases dating to the 2007 Nandigram land agitation, accused the BJP of capturing booths. Kabir was detained during voting after a confrontation with police.

Chief Minister Adhikari said Muslim voters had supported the BJP in both constituencies. The victories increased the BJP’s strength in the 294-member Assembly to 209 seats.
