María del Carmen “Maricarmen” Abascal, an 87-year-old Madrid woman whose eviction from her longtime home triggered mass protests over Spain’s housing crisis, died Wednesday while hospitalized, according to the Madrid tenants’ union.
Abascal had been in hospital with severe anxiety and exhaustion since Sept. 23, when police and social workers removed her by stretcher from the home where she had lived for more than 70 years. A cause of death was not announced.
Her eviction followed the purchase of the property by an investment fund. Several days later, her lawyer said she had reached an eight-year agreement with the landlord that would have allowed her to return and continue paying her previous rent. She had planned to sign the agreement after recovering but remained in hospital.
Following news of her death, thousands marched from Madrid’s Puerta del Sol toward parliament, while demonstrators also gathered in Barcelona. Trade unions announced a nationwide general strike over housing for Nov. 11.
The protests have focused on rising rents, housing shortages and evictions. They intensified political pressure after parliament rejected decrees intended to curb evictions and ease rent pressures, contributing to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s decision to call an early election for Nov. 29.
Sánchez expressed condolences, while opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo urged political parties not to use Abascal’s death for campaigning.
